diet problemsFor most people, diets seem to work, at least for a little while. But if you are one of the few that has experienced diet problems, you know how frustrating it can be.

There are some common problems that hinder diets, and below we have highlighted three of them:

#1 – Self sabotage

This is easily one of the most common diet problems, and it’s often a subconscious thing, not anything that you will be immediately aware of. However, it always shows up in the actions you take each day.

Even though you have every intention of sticking to your diet and losing weight, you may catch yourself doing things that contradict your goals, like gobbling down a doughnut even while part of your mind was shrieking, “What are you DOING?!” Essentially, what happens is that part of you wants to stick to the diet and achieve your weight loss goal, but another part of you doesn’t want that at all. That’s the part that gobbles down the doughnut (or other fattening foods).

Why on earth would this part of you NOT want to succeed at weight loss?

Because he or she might be frightened about losing weight, maybe feeling a bit insecure, embarrassed, not wanting to call attention to him/herself, and so on. There are endless reasons why you might be sabotaging yourself, and they will always be emotional in origin.

If you keep catching yourself screwing up, this is probably why. Take a little time to jot down some notes about what’s really going on inside of you. Are you afraid? Why would you want to sabotage yourself? What aspects of losing weight make you feel uncomfortable?

Get clear on these and you’ll be able to address the fears and overcome the self-sabotage.

#2 – Hidden calories/fat/sugar/sodium

Sometimes you think you’re doing everything right, but it turns out that you are taking in more calories than you originally thought, maybe because you didn’t think you were using so much salad dressing, or those low-cal cookies are loaded with sodium and sugar.

If your diet stalls and you can’t figure out why, examine closely the foods you’ve been eating. Read every label and be on the lookout for hidden calories, fat, sugar and sodium. Sometimes it’s a simple little thing that can mess up the whole weight loss process.

#3 – Are you dehydrated?

Drinking plenty of water is a crucial component of weight loss. In fact, you could be doing everything else exactly right and still not lose any weight (or lose painfully slowly).

If you suspect this might be an issue for you, start upping your water intake. If you don’t like the taste of water, try squeezing a wedge of lemon or lime into it, or adjusting the temperature of it to make it more palatable.

There are other possible diet challenges too, but these are definitely among the most common like these diet problems.
