We all know by now that a proper diet and exercise routine will help with weight loss – but there are also various herbs and supplements that can give the weary dieter an edge, helping them to lose more weight, or lose the same amount in less time. However, not all supplements are safe.
Below are a few effective herbs and supplements that can help with weight loss safely.
Green Tea
Green tea is well-known for its many health benefits, but it is also widely recognized for its thermogenic properties, which means it can boost your metabolism and help you lose more weight. The main danger exists when too much green tea is consumed, causing caffeine overload which includes jitters, anxiety, nausea and heart palpitations. Experts say that you really only need 3-4 cups of green tea a day to enjoy great health and weight loss benefits. If you can’t withstand any amount of caffeine, green tea does come in decaffeinated versions.
Chromium picolinate
Chromium helps regulate your blood sugar levels, and can help prevent drastic ups and downs that contribute to the storage of fat in your body. It also is reported to help reduce sugar cravings, which can help you stick to your healthy eating plan and lose more weight. There are some dangers in taking extremely high doses of chromium for extended periods of time, but generally it should be safe at recommended dosages (up to 1.6 mg daily).
Gymnesa Sylvestre
This herb is also reputed to reduce cravings for sugar and help balance blood sugar levels. Few known side effects are reported, except perhaps hypoglycemia symptoms in people whose blood sugar levels dropped too low – common symptoms of hypoglycemia include shakiness, weakness, nausea, jitters, irritability, low energy, and headaches. If you experience any of these when taking gymnesa sylvestre, stop taking it and consult your doctor.
In fact, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before taking any herbal supplements because they can aggravate existing medical conditions and cause interactions with medication you may be taking.
