Losing excess weight can undoubtedly improve your quality of life, not to mention your appearance.  And like most people, if you’re carrying a few extra pounds (or more than a few) you probably want to lose it sooner rather than later.  This is understandable, but some common sense and caution should still be used before doing something that will set you up for health problems later.

Checking with your doctor is a good idea, because he or she may be able to recommend a healthy, effective weight loss plan.

#1 – Remember that weight loss is not just a one-trick pony

You need to address several areas to be successful, such as overall calorie intake, quality of foods eaten, level of physical activity, and nutrients needed for optimal health.

It makes sense that your diet should include healthy, nutrient-rich food.  But you may also benefit from taking a multi-vitamin or select supplements, according to what your doctor recommends.

It also makes sense that in order to burn more calories, you need to get your body moving more than it was before.  (Again, check with your doctor on this to be sure exercise is okay for you.)  If you currently lead a very sedentary life, you’ll need to start slowly by walking briskly for 15-30 minutes each day, or performing similar low-intensity exercises.  As you get into better shape, you can increase both the length of your workouts and the intensity at which you work.

#2 – Be realistic

Don’t try to lose 20 pounds in a week!  You may have been brainwashed by the hype in advertising copy if you believe this is possible – or healthy.  Deep down inside you know it’s better to focus on losing a modest yet still satisfying amount of weight each week, and that amount will be determined by how much you currently weigh, as well as the type of diet plan you follow, and your activity level.

It’s okay to strive for rapid weight loss, but not TOO rapid.  In other words, dropping weight quickly is okay as long as you’re doing it in ways that don’t damage your body’s delicate balance.

#3 – Listen to your body

Believe it or not, your body wants to work with you to drop excess pounds and get healthy and strong!  But it doesn’t want to be punished or harmed while doing so.  Instead, do your best to pay attention to how your body feels as you make changes to your diet and activity level.  If something hurts or makes you feel ill, it’s probably not a good thing.

Replace caffeinated beverages with water, and you’ll immediately help your body release excess weight more easily.  There are reports that caffeine can decrease insulin sensitivity, which means your body will be less effective at processing sugar, which means you may end up storing more of it as fat.  Even if you don’t ingest a lot of caffeine, it’s vital to be sure you are drinking enough water as it helps greatly with weight loss and overall health.

#7 – Get happy
